Whispering Pines

In my opinion no favorite song list is complete without at least one song by Johnny Horton.  He's one of my all time favorites!  You all will probably see several from him, because I can't just pick one and music was so much better back in the 50's.  Apparently he was classified as a Rockabilly artist, that's fun huh?  He was however, taken from us entirely too early at the young age of 35.

The song I chose to share this week is Whispering Pines.  My poppa is also a big fan of Johnny Horton and we grew up listening to a lot of his music.  A very distinct memory I have of this song was from a trip back home from visiting my grandparents at the coast in Brookings, OR.  We were coming over the mountain a little over an hour from home when this song came on the radio.  My poppa pulled over and him and my momma proceeded to dance.  It was such a sweet moment, there on the top of the mountain amongst the pines.  Listen to the song HERE.

The snowflakes fall as winter comes
And time just seems to fly
Is it the loneliness in me
That makes me want to cry?
My heart is sad like a morning dove
That's lost its mate in flight
Hear the cooing of his lonely heart
Through the stillness of the night
Whispering pines, whispering pines
Tell me is it so
Whispering pines, whispering pines
You're the one who knows
My darlin' is gone, ohh, she's gone
And I need your sympathy
Whispering pines
Send my baby back to me
See that squirrel up in the tree
His mate there on the ground
Hear their barking call of love
For the happiness they've found
Is my love still my love, ohh, this I gotta know
Send the message by the wind
Because I love her so
Whispering pines, whispering pines
Tell me is it so
Whispering pines, whispering pines
You're the one who knows
My darlin' is gone, ohh, she's gone
And I need your sympathy

I Will Never

I feel like most of us make a list or at least think about the things we want to be.  But how many of us think about the things we don't want to be?  These are just some late night pondering's I occasionally have.

I will never come between two people.  That's happened to me and I didn't like how it felt.

I will never apologize for being the lady my parents raised.  I'm strong and independent, nothing to apologize for there.

I will never be a sedate, calm, collected woman.  I was born free and I'll always be a touch wild.

I will never not smile and laugh too much.  What is a world without laughter?

I will never not be too loud.  I'm a very happy and excitable person, I don't really understand 'library voices'.

I will never compromise my integrity.  You've gotta stand for something, or you'll fall for anything.

I will never abandon my love and compassion for animals.  How can we expect them to treat us right if we don't do the same?

I will never give up dreaming.  Dreams and goals are apart of what makes us better people.

I will never stop learning.  I may be done with school soon, but that doesn't mean I have nothing left to learn.

I will never give up on my quest to find whatever it is my soul aches for.  Who knows where that search may lead.

I will never give up on trying to be the healthiest and best version of me that I can.  It's a life changer.

I will never stop loving.  No one likes an Ice Queen.

I will never not be proud of who I am and where I came from.  My roots run deep.

What are some of your never wills?

Throwing Horseshoes At The Moon

Throwing Horseshoes at the Moon is a lovely song by Tom Russell. I just love his
music! My grandma on my momma's side was born and raised in Northern Florida,
and her poppa was a riverboat gambler. He was half Creek Indian. One of my
cousins who is still on the east coast actually has the cabin they once called
home in their backyard. My grandma and her siblings grew up with very little,
much the same as many in that time. I clearly never met my great-grandpa, but
for some reason this song makes me think of him. A man I never knew, following
a need many couldn't understand. I hope you enjoy! Listen to the song HERE

Throwing Horseshoes At The Moon
by:Tom Russell

My father was a gambler, he threw horseshoes at the moon
He won a million dollars, and lost a million, too
They repossessed the house, and towed that Cadil-lac
My daddy, he just smiled and said, "One day I'll win it back"

My daddy bought that Cadillac off a Detroit motor line
Then he drove it through his home town, to prove he hit his prime
With hundred dollars bills in a Saint Chris money clip
And four kids starrin' proudly from that big ole sinkin' ship
Throwin' horseshoes at the moon

(Chorus)
Boys, it's mighty risky odds
Some-times ya hook the milky way or the outstretched hands of God
But mostly they just fall into a dark and dusty hole
And the sound of fallin' horse shoes pulls upon your soul
Throwin' horse shoes at the moon

My daddy was a gambler but he had an honest heart
He never did com-plain when the whole thing fell a-part
He just swam that sea of alcohol till he reached the other side
How can ya be a loser if you never lose your pride?
Throwin' horse shoes at the moon

(Chorus)
Boys, it's mighty risky odds
Some-times ya hook the milky way or the outstretched hands of God
But mostly they just fall into a dark and dusty hole
And the sound of fallin' horse shoes pulls upon your soul
Throwin' horse shoes at the moon

Throwin horse shoes at the moon

Skittish

When I stop and think about the relationships I've had, I realize I may appear to be broken.  Now incapable of an emotion that used to come so freely.  Like a kind, trusting, green colt that was abandoned and bucked out.  All of it's trust swiftly lost at the foolish hand of a single man.  The kindness it once knew replaced by a meanness it does not understand.  What it once knew as a soft word and kind touch, all it now knows is it must ever be wary and watchful of a brutal and course hand.  Unable to remember what came before.  Too scared to try and allow anyone in close.  It's turned wild and fights every advancement, friend or foe.  Eyes wide and wild, it visibly shakes at your approach.  The fear much more obvious than my own, but I see a part of myself in those pale blue eyes.  Too stubborn to back down completely.  Somewhere behind the pain, deep in the swirling depths is the true heart of the animal.  While our current choice may be to run away I believe that someday we can both stand our ground and accept a kind hand.

Hey Brother

Sometime over winter break I decided to find some new music for working out.  I like upbeat, fast paced, exciting music when I'm in the gym, so I usually have to look outside my normal genre.  One night on my way home in my parents Duramax I was listening to Sirius and heard   Hey Brother by Avicii.  I immediately liked it.  I just watched the video, and if I hadn't loved it before, I certainly would now, very touching.  Based off the lyrics and not the music video, I found it touched close to home.  I have a brother and a sister, and while over the years we've fought, we'd do anything for the either of the other of us.  It's just a nice song and I think I can say I'm liking this artist too.

Hey Brother
by: Avicii
Hey brother, there’s an endless road to re-discover.
Hey sister, know the water's sweet but blood is thicker.
Oh if the sky comes falling down, for you, there’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do.

Hey brother, do you still believe in one another?
Hey sister, do you still believe in love I wonder?
Oh if the sky comes falling down, for you, there’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do.

What if I'm far from home?
Oh brother I will hear you call.
What if I lose it all?
Oh sister I will help you out!
Oh if the sky comes falling down, for you, there’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do.

Hey brother, there’s an endless road to re-discover.

Here's to the New Year

A new year, a new chapter.
Experience has led me to this point, this year.
The here and now.
The past, the present, the future.
Memories, expectations and hope.
Dreams to be fulfilled.
Highways to be covered.
Wide open spaces to be ridden.
Here's to the new relationships to be formed, new memories to be made and new country to be seen.
Come June my horses, dogs and I will be headed out for destinations unknown.
Refreshed and renewed, I'm ready and willing to follow the trail He's blazed for me.
Excitement like I've never known courses through my veins, igniting my restless soul.
My options are limitless, my choices unrestricted.
2014 you're mine to live and I plan on rocking your socks!
